Carol Katz
Carol is a theatre maker, writer, director, and performer, born in Philadelphia, PA. She was a longtime member of the legendary Rachel Rosenthal Company and co-founder of Los Angeles-based movement theatre company, “Gaerung” – named “One to Watch” by LA Weekly. She has performed in LA with Zoo District in their Ovation Award-winning productions of “The Submission” by Eugene Ionesco, and “Home” by Steven Haworth. Appearing with Band of Toughs of Boulder, CO, in Chuck Mee’s “Big Love”, the Daily Camera called her performance “soulful, otherworldly, and sensitively played.”
She devises original work in collaboration with artists across different disciplines. She has studied the Viewpoints with the SITI Company and performed in their world premiere production of ”Twenty Three seconds about John Cage” at the Atlas Theatre at UC Boulder. Carol holds an MFA in Contemporary Performance from Naropa University, where she studied with many of the original New York Post-Modern Dance and Performance Art pioneers.
She has performed in experimental and improvisational movement pieces by Barbara Dilley, a founder of the Judson Church and Grand Union dance collectives, and in work by Wendell Beavers, founder of NYU’s ETW. While at Naropa, she studied with, and was a featured performer in pieces developed there by Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Company and by Dan Safer and his Witness Relocation Company. She also appeared in the world premiere of “Beckett Butoh”, a movement theater piece by Katsura Kan.
Her work has been presented at The New York International Fringe Festival, REDCAT, Bootleg Theater, and Highways Performance Space. It is experimental, interdisciplinary, and deeply personal – interweaving physicality and lush visuality into her own mythopoetic language.
Carol is co-founder, along with Elizabeth Watt, of Paloma Street Studio, a beautiful work and performance space in DTLA dedicated to fostering the creation and development of new performance work. Although Paloma St., as a physical space, was shuttered in 2017, their mission continues.
Carol maintains a passionate interest in many different Somatics practices. A one-time yoga and Pilates teacher, she is now immersed in studying “BodyMind Centering”, “Experiential Anatomy”, and “Developmental Movement Technique”.
